CHOIR KOGHTAN
The Choir KOGHTAN is an a cappella 4 voices group composed of around thirty singers.
It was founded in 1992 within the Armenian General Benevolent Union, the association whose objective is to maintain and to develop the education and the Armenian culture all over the world.
The choir has been directed since its creation by Haïg SARKISSIAN, prize-winner of the National Music academy of Erevan (Armenia), the choir dedicates it self to the spreading of religious and laymen songs, carriers of the story and the secular tradition of the Armenians.
Most of the songs interpreted by the Choir Koghtan have a very former origin dating back to the first centuries AD. The troubadours passed them on orally until the 19th century.
KOMITAS, the famous musician of the beginning of the 20th century, collected, transcribed and harmonized them for a polyphonic execution.
Since then, several composers of Armenia and of the Diaspora have enriched this directory of traditional songs.
